Alexa, Amazon’s smart voice assistant will be native to more than two thirds of smart speakers by the end of the year. This will be a big win against Google in a battle that Amazon has taken in stride as it moves to dominate the market not only through its Echos but other third party devices that have Alexa in-built. Sonos for instance has plans to launch a new speaker that will be running Alexa, allowing users to enjoy voice technology for the first time on a Sonos system.
Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service has the flexibility of letting manufacturers integrate it into their devices and is open to developers. This has happened since 2015 giving Alexa greater penetration and enticing third-party developers to use the Alexa Skills Kit in building skills relevant to the service. Use of cloud services has also made it easier for developers to write code that can integrate into Alexa’s abilities so that spoken commands are understood more seamlessly.
