Amazon is ramping up its presence in the Big Apple with a new 360,000-square-foot office in Manhattan. The new office that will open next year is expected to accommodate almost 2,000 employees working in different divisions including Amazon Advertising, Amazon Fashion and Amazon Web Services.
The new hub is expected to also serve as the New York headquarters for Amazon Advertising. Teams domiciled there within this division will focus on design, engineering, product and marketing.
Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide advertising, Paul Kotas said that the company’s goal to create 100,000 full-time U.S. jobs by mid next year was on track. These positions are expected to be full-benefit. He added that Amazon is thrilled to expand in New York because of the top talent available.
Amazon’s expansion in the Big Apple has been ongoing with a recent unveiling of plans for an 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center on Staten Island. This will be the first fulfillment center for Amazon in the state and is expected to create about 2,250 jobs. Amazon’s current presence in New York includes a Prime Now quick delivery center, Amazon Books stores and a fashion photo studio.
The complex that will house the new office is part of Manhattan West mixed-use project that sits in the Hudson Yards District. Comprised of apartments, office space, retail, a hotel and restaurants, the block, Five Manhattan West, has 16 stories and is undergoing refurbishment at a cost of $353 million. Amazon will occupy a couple of floors in the building which is being developed by the same entity that did Amazon’s new European headquarters in London – Brookfield.
New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo welcomed Amazon’s expansion and pointed at the state’s robust economic conditions and top talent as factors that keep attracting companies. He added that the state will continue to support business growth and create high-paying jobs across all sectors.
New York City is in contention to attract Amazon’s second headquarters and possibly bring the $5 billion investment and 50,000 jobs to the Big Apple. The city is competing with more than 100 cities that have expressed interest. The city’s bid emphasizes New York’s diverse and top-talent workforce and top-notch universities.
