Sonos, the consumer electronics company based in Santa Barbara, California, is gearing for the launch of a new speaker packed with voice controls.
All indications are that the new speaker will have Amazon’s Alexa but there is a probability that it could come out as a competitor to Apple Homepod, Google Home or Amazon’s Echo. Whichever way this goes, users of the speaker will be enjoying voice technology for the first time on a Sonos system. Areas of immediate interest will be using voice to request weather updates, music or sports scores.
The streaming pioneer is best recognized for high cost, premium quality speaker systems that are unique in multi-room audio environments. While the speakers remain expensive, the frustration for users has been the inability to issue voice commands to control the speakers which other industry titans have recently prioritized.
From the design, seen in a recent filing with the FCC and first noted by ZatzNotFunny, it is clear voice-control functionality with far field microphones will be center-stage in the new hardware.
