Editor’s Note: This story has been updated with comments from Amazon Amazon is cutting a team in Seattle which supports its builder delivery drivers and other employees and moving the projects into Phoenix. The Seattle Times reports the operations center at the organization’s South Lake Union headquarters employs approximately 130 individuals who guide and route drivers providing products and staff packaging them through Prime Today, AmazonFresh, Amazon Restaurants and other programs across the Western U.S.. An Amazon spokeswoman told GeekWire that the company is working with the folks impacted by the move that will help them find other jobs, both in Phoenix, Seattle or elsewhere. The main impetus for the transfer, the company says, would be to set the team at precisely the exact same place as groups from different areas of the business that handle similar surgeries, such as Whole Foods deliveries. The Arizona space also provides more space to grow these groups. Amazon released the following announcement regarding the relocation of their operations staff:”Amazon employs over 500,000 people globally, and we’re continuing to hire upon the provider. We’re always assessing headcount needs to ensure we’re dedicating resources economically and effectively, so it is typical for there to be minor changes in headcount in various areas of the company. We also work to support almost any colleagues who might be impacted and attempt to locate alternative functions at the business where possible.” The move comes as Amazon’s connection with its own hometown continues to fray following the recent passing of a controversial tax on big businesses, although the company claims that the relocation doesn’t have anything to do with the so-called head tax. Amazon paused structure on a few of its office towers as the argument raged, and though it has stopped work, Amazon reported the tax has forced the company to question its potential growth in Seattle. Amazon continues to fight the tax, donating to a campaign to repeal it. Earlier this season, Amazon cut about 500 jobs as part of adjustments on its core consumer retail enterprise. Those impacted were provided other places within the corporation.
